Helping Norco Residents Recognize and Avoid Online Scams & Fraud

Riverside, CA., (September 28, 2026) — Last Thursday evening, residents of Norco, CA, got a crash course in staying one step ahead of scammers.
CTRL-A and Legacy Core led "Protect Yourself from Scams, Fraud & Online Threats," a free scam prevention workshop hosted as part of Laura Ramirez’s Community Workshop series. The session covered the scams residents are most likely to run into today:
bank impersonation calls
family emergency scams that use AI voice cloning
fake tech support
toll and package texts
property deed fraud
government and Medicare impersonation
"Knowing something about you doesn't prove someone is legitimate," said Brian Covarrubias of CTRL-A. "Caller ID, email addresses, websites, voices, and even video can all be faked."
The presenters pointed to warning signs that show up in nearly every scam: urgency, fear, claims of authority, requests for secrecy, and demands for payment by gift card, wire transfer, or cryptocurrency. Their advice came down to three steps: Stop when someone pressures you, Verify through a source you already trust, and Ask someone you trust before acting. The session ended with what to do after clicking a suspicious link, sharing a password, or sending money.
"Make the scammer prove who they are," Covarrubias said. "You don't have to prove anything to them."
